Is it better to stay near the airport or the city centre?

Few of our web visitors asked us where it is best for them to stay near the KLIA airport or the city centre. The the answer to that question is really depends on the purpose and duration of your stay.

The airport is a good 60km away from the city centre, so if the purpose is mainly sightseeing and shopping, then it would definitely be best to stay in the city centre. The only real reason it would be good to stay near the airport would be if he happened to be attending a conference or something in one of the hotels there, attending an Formula 1 or motorsports event happening Sepang International Circuit, or if he was on a really short transit.

The other consideration is traffic. On a good day, it will take 1 hour to get into the heart of town from the airport. On a bad day, up to 2 hours or even more. Even if your plans is to only come to town once during your stay, you have to double check the traffic before heading out. That’s if you aredriving yourself or taking a taxi (which can cost close to RM100 if traffic is really bad).

Alternatively, it you wish to take the fast train to KL Sentral followed by LRT/Monorail downtown, it’ll still take a solid hour. With shopping bags and other stuff to carry, it can get quite tiresome. Also, the train only leaves from KLIA itself, so it’ll still be a slight journey to the actual hotel (either walking through the terminal to Pan Pacific/Sama Sama or taking the hotel shuttle to whichever other hotel nearby).

In summary:

Staying near the KLIA airport

  • 1 hour – 2 hour drive from the KLIA to the city centre (Cost: RM100-200 one way)
  • 40 minutes by train to KL Sentral (Cost: RM 35 one way)
  • Near Sepang International Circuit (Formula 1 and other motorsports event)
  • Ideal if your hotel provide shuttle service to KLIA (for you to take the train)
  • Near to Putrajaya and Cyberjaya (by Taxi and Train)
  • Ideal if you’re just on a short transit (few hours)

Staying at the city centre

  • Few minutes away from one attraction to another
  • Cheaper taxi ride
  • Light Rapid Train (LRT) available (RM 1.00 – RM2.40 per ride) – Download the Rapid Kuala Lumpur Train Map here
  • Ideal if you stay longer than 1 day in Kuala Lumpur or Malaysia
